The Annual Wartrace Community Wide Yard Sale

About fifteen years ago an idea was born that has grown into a annual Wartrace tradition. Nancy Powell, a writer who published The Bridle, a monthly newspaper about Wartrace and its residents, thought a town-wide yard sale timed to coincide with the Tennessee Walking Horse Celebration might bring folks to town for a weekend.

She was right. Nancy recruited some volunteers, printed a few fliers, and the yard sale was off to a successful first year.

Over the years the event has taken on a festive county fair-type atmosphere with dozens of vendors lining the main highway through town and around the downtown square. As local residents depleted their attics and garages of trash and treasure, organizers started inviting out of town folks to bring their items to the sale. Now, most vendors come from other towns to display their wares which include antiques, collectibles, clothing, books, musical instruments, appliances, campers and even cars. The sale now draws thousands over the two days.

One of the reasons the annual event has been successful is that it's scheduled to coincide with the first weekend of the National Walking Horse Celebration in Shelbyville. Walking Horse fans from all over the U.S. now include the Wartrace Yard Sale on their "must do" list of activities.

The Yard Sale is always held on the fourth Friday and Saturday of August. A modest vendor fee reserves a 12 ft. by 12 ft. space and secures a listing on the official map of vendor locations which is made available to visitors.

The event is sponsored by the Wartrace Chamber of Commerce and vendor permits and reserved space may be obtained by calling (931) 389-9999 or (931) 389-6144 during business hours.
